Sudden loss of libido after breakup

Three months after breaking up with his girlfriend, a 24-year-old man experienced a psychological crisis and gradually lost his desire for women.

A 24-year-old man sought help at E Hospital, reporting emotional distress and physiological issues. He experienced a loss of interest and desire for women, along with erectile dysfunction, stating that "even adult films and assistive devices were ineffective."

Doctor Pham Quang Khai, from the Department of Urology and Andrology Surgery, diagnosed the patient with stress and a psychological crisis stemming from a significant emotional shock. Despite this, his endocrine function, ultrasound results, and semen analysis were normal, with testosterone hormone levels within the healthy range.

"Excessive stress negatively affects the central nervous system, leading to reduced libido and erectile dysfunction," the doctor explained. He proposed psychological interventions to help the patient alleviate pressure and restore mental balance.

If the condition does not improve, the doctor will prescribe medication to enhance erectile function and recommend micronutrient supplements to improve overall physical health.

Doctors emphasize testosterone's critical role in male physiology, contributing to excitement, pleasure, fertility, and endocrine system regulation.

This condition stems from two main categories of causes. Secondary causes include stress, tension, or the use of certain cardiovascular or antidepressant medications, which can diminish sexual function. Inactive lifestyles, alcohol abuse, and stimulant use also increase risk. Primary causes involve abnormalities, gene, trauma, or unexplained factors.

Breakups and divorce represent not just relationship loss but also a profound psychological crisis for many men. Feelings of abandonment, failure, or diminished self-worth can result in a loss of libido or, conversely, an increased sexual drive as a compensatory mechanism to cope with emotional emptiness.

Research published in the American Medical Association journal indicates that stress-induced insomnia can reduce testosterone by 15% if it persists for one week. Furthermore, men consistently sleeping less than 5 hours per night for over one week exhibit significantly lower testosterone levels, similar to those found in elderly individuals.

Doctors advise men experiencing this condition to adhere strictly to prescribed treatment protocols and medication. A healthy lifestyle is also crucial, encompassing regular exercise, abstinence from smoking, alcohol, and stimulants. Prioritize early and sufficient sleep, aiming for 7-8 hours daily. It is essential to avoid excessive use of dietary supplements or unverified "word-of-mouth" remedies, which could exacerbate the problem. Men should also avoid excessive worry or self-blame, and seek prompt medical attention for effective treatment.
