His colleagues and a traffic police team cleared the way for him to be rushed to emergency care on 4/5. The on-call team at Tam Tri Cao Lanh Hospital initially diagnosed a myocardial infarction, but laboratory results and a CT scan revealed the patient had a coronary myocardial bridge.
On 6/5, Doctor of Medical Specialty II Tran Phuoc Hoa, Head of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department, explained that a myocardial bridge is a congenital condition where a segment of the coronary artery runs deep within the heart muscle rather than on its surface. This cardiovascular condition accounts for 5% of all cardiovascular cases.
"A myocardial infarction occurs due to narrowing inside the blood vessel lumen, whereas a coronary myocardial bridge is a condition where the blood vessel is constricted, squeezed, and compressed from the outside by external force from strong heart contractions," Dr. Hoa clarified. In severe cases, this condition can lead to myocardial ischemia, arrhythmia, and cardiac arrest.
The teacher reported experiencing transient chest pain previously but had not sought medical attention. Following medication, he is now alert, free of chest pain, and has resumed normal activities.
The treating doctor determined that the condition does not currently require intervention or surgery. However, the patient must avoid stress, refrain from tobacco use, undergo lipid-lowering therapy, and monitor his blood pressure.
