In the healthcare sector, the three honored hospitals are all established, last-resort medical facilities. They play a vital role in the region's healthcare system and in advancing specialized medical techniques in the southern area.
Cho Ray Hospital, a special-grade general hospital under the Ministry of Health, treats numerous severe cases referred from various provinces and cities. Founded in 1900 as Hopital municipal de Cholon, it was officially renamed Cho Ray Hospital in 1957 after several changes. The hospital manages approximately 8,000 to 9,000 patient visits daily, occasionally surpassing 10,000 after holidays. This is Cho Ray Hospital's second Ho Chi Minh City Gold Brand Award, having first received it in 2021.
Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital operates as a last-resort general hospital under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health. Its origins trace back to Hopital de Gia Dinh, constructed by the French in 1916. Today, the hospital boasts a full range of major specialties, managing about 5,500 patient visits daily, with numbers rising to 6,000-6,500 during weeks before and after holidays.
Hung Vuong Hospital serves as a last-resort obstetrics and gynecology specialty facility in the southern region. It originated as the obstetrics department of Cho Ray Hospital, which became the independent Cho Lon Maternity Hospital in 1938. In 1958, the facility was inaugurated as Hung Vuong Maternity Hospital, then renamed Hung Vuong Hospital in 1968. Notably, in 2024, it achieved a significant milestone as the first public hospital in Vietnam to earn international ACHS hospital quality certification from Australia.
