Treating varicose veins with laser

Mr. Hoa, 52, who suffered from varicose veins for many years, was treated by doctors using endovenous laser therapy.

Mr. Hoa's leg veins were prominent and twisted, and oral medication had not provided a complete cure. During his visit to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Master of Science, Doctor, Level I Specialist Le Chi Hieu, from the Department of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, assessed that the patient's venous valve system was severely weakened. Blood stagnated in his legs, leading to swelling, pain, and numerous prominent veins. Given Mr. Hoa's history of diabetes, his treatment was more complex than typical cases because diabetic patients' blood vessels are fragile and have poor infection resistance. Therefore, doctors needed to choose a suitable intervention method to ensure rapid wound healing and minimize postoperative complications.

Following consultation, doctors decided to use endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), a minimally invasive technique that replaces traditional open surgery. Unlike traditional methods that require a long incision to remove the vein, doctors only needed a small, needle-sized puncture to insert a laser fiber into the vessel. The heat energy from the laser collapses and seals the dysfunctional vein, automatically redirecting blood flow to other healthy veins.

After a one-hour surgery, Mr. Hoa was stable, walked easily, and was discharged. He reported experiencing no pain like previous surgeries, felt less heaviness in his legs, and noted a reduction in prominent veins.

Master of Science, Doctor, Level I Specialist Le Thi Ngoc Hang, from the Department of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at Tam Anh General Hospital, stated that the advantages of endovenous laser therapy include no bleeding, no scarring, and a fast recovery time. When detected at an early stage, the condition can improve well with appropriate treatment. Doctors advise individuals experiencing symptoms such as prominent blue veins, pain, leg swelling, or a tingling sensation to seek timely examination and treatment.
