Underarm darkening after hair removal

Two weeks after a spa hair removal treatment, Ms. Nhung, 22, developed distinct, spreading dark brown patches under her arms.

Ms. Nhung had her underarm hair removed at a spa using hot wax, applied and then pulled off forcefully. Initially, she felt a slight burning sensation, followed by prolonged redness and darkening of the underarm area.

Dr. Vu Thi Thuy Trang, a specialist in dermatology and aesthetic dermatology at Tam Anh General Hospital TP HCM, diagnosed Ms. Nhung with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), a skin darkening condition that follows irritation or inflammation.

Dr. Trang explained that waxing, particularly hot waxing, risks skin damage if performed incorrectly. When hot wax adheres firmly and is pulled off forcefully, the skin surface can inflame and abrade. Individuals with a predisposition to hyperpigmentation often see their underarms turn dark brown within a few days.

Tam Anh General Hospital TP HCM frequently sees patients with post-waxing complications. Dr. Trang attributes this to some spas, skincare facilities, and hair salons performing unsafe hair removal or using excessively hot wax, which damages the skin. These errors are particularly dangerous in sensitive areas like the underarms or bikini line, potentially leading to prolonged hyperpigmentation or scarring without prompt treatment.

Doctors prescribed Ms. Nhung four to six pico laser sessions to break down deep pigments, helping the darkened area fade. They also incorporated skin barrier recovery products to reduce persistent inflammation. Ms. Nhung must limit underarm friction, temporarily stop using deodorant initially, and completely shield the treated area from the sun to prevent dark pigmentation recurrence.

After three treatment sessions and proper home care, Ms. Nhung's underarm skin became lighter, with the dark patches fading by approximately 60%.

Dr. Trang advises individuals seeking hair removal to choose reputable facilities where a doctor performs the procedure directly. Post-procedure, if prolonged redness, burning, blisters, swelling, pustules, or hyperpigmentation persists beyond 48 hours, seek timely medical attention. Beyond waxing, modern hair removal methods like ipl and 6d laser offer long-lasting effectiveness and safety, reducing skin damage risks.
