Thanh was diagnosed with hyperhidrosis at a medical facility in the US. Despite treatment with medication and botox injections, the results were unsatisfactory. During a trip back to Vietnam at the end of the year, she sought treatment at Tam Anh General Hospital Ho Chi Minh City. Dr. Le Chi Hieu, a specialist in Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, explained that the autonomic nervous system plays a vital role in controlling automatic bodily functions, including heart rate, respiration, digestion, and sweating. When the sympathetic nervous system is overstimulated by factors such as stress or conditions like hyperthyroidism or diabetes, the body sweats more than usual.
Hyperhidrosis is a common bodily disorder, not dangerous but causing significant inconvenience. Common areas for excessive sweating include the armpits, hands, and feet. Constantly moist skin in enclosed areas also increases the risk of bacterial and fungal infections, leading to unpleasant odors.
Thanh experienced significant sweating in both hands, even on cold days or at night. Therefore, doctors performed an endoscopic sympathetic ganglionectomy to provide a definitive solution.

The surgical team made two small incisions (5 mm) in both armpits, inserted endoscopic instruments, and collapsed the lung to create ample space for the procedure and prevent lung tissue damage during surgery. With camera assistance, doctors clearly observed the sympathetic ganglia and resected the bilateral thoracic sympathetic ganglia group to reduce sweating in both hands. Before completing the surgery, the team re-inflated the lung, ensuring the patient's respiratory function returned to its original state. After the surgery, Thanh's hands were dry.
Dr. Hieu stated that endoscopic sympathetic ganglionectomy is typically used when conservative treatments, such as: antiperspirants, iontophoresis (ion transfer technology), anticholinergic medications, or botox injections, are ineffective. Advantages of endoscopic surgery include a short operating time, high cosmetic appeal, definitive removal of sweat glands in the hands, armpits, and face, and long-lasting effectiveness.
Alongside surgical treatment, patients should also adopt lifestyle changes. These include wearing loose, breathable clothing, carrying a spare shirt if exercising or moving outdoors in hot weather, and limiting spicy foods, alcoholic beverages, and caffeine. Patients need to maintain mental stability, avoiding anxiety and stress to prevent adverse effects on the sympathetic nervous system. Practices like meditation, yoga, and deep breathing are therapies that help improve mood.
