VCF is a thin, soft film, measuring approximately 5 x 5 cm, containing 28% Nonoxynol-9 and no hormones. Users fold the film and insert it deep into the vagina, near the cervix. After at least 15 minutes, the film dissolves, releasing its spermicidal active ingredient, which acts locally. Each film is used for a single act of intercourse and remains effective for a maximum of 3 hours after insertion. If intercourse continues, a new film should be used as directed.

VCF does not affect ovulation; instead, it works locally within the vagina. Unlike methods requiring daily maintenance, VCF is used only when a woman needs it. Once correctly inserted and given sufficient time, the film dissolves inside the body. Users do not need to remove it after intercourse, nor do they need to continue using it the next day if there is no further need.
