What happens to your stomach when you consume too much honey?

Honey has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, but excessive consumption can lead to weight gain and stomach problems.

Honey is often used as a sugar substitute in tea, baking, and more. It contains natural sweeteners, enzymes, and peptides that can fight infections, boost the immune system, and enhance the body's defenses. It can also inhibit bacterial growth and reduce inflammation.

For the digestive system, honey acts as a probiotic, supporting the balance of gut microbiota and promoting gut health. It also has mild laxative properties, stimulating bowel movements and alleviating indigestion, bloating, and constipation. Honey's anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties can soothe the stomach lining, reducing issues like acid reflux and ulcers, and protecting the intestines from damage.

According to the American Heart Association, adult men should consume about 36g of honey per day, while women and children should not exceed 24g. Infants under one year old should not consume honey due to the high risk of botulism.

Stomach problems: Consuming too much honey can worsen constipation due to its high fructose content. This high sugar level can also lead to bloating, a common side effect of honey on the stomach. Honey is a high FODMAP food, so it should be avoided by individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Diarrhea: Consuming large amounts of honey, especially on an empty stomach, can increase stomach acid, irritating the digestive tract. The high fructose content in honey can hinder nutrient absorption in the small intestine, leading to diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating. The risk of honey-induced diarrhea is higher in people with sensitive digestive systems.

Elevated blood sugar: Exceeding the recommended dosage of honey can increase blood sugar levels due to its sugar and carbohydrate content. Overconsumption can cause blood sugar spikes, posing a risk for people with diabetes. Blood sugar levels and liver function are closely related.

Weight gain: Individuals who are overweight or obese and monitoring their weight should control their honey intake. The high calorie, sugar, and carbohydrate content can contribute to fat accumulation.

Dental problems: Excessive honey consumption translates to high sugar intake, potentially leading to cavities. Approximately 82% of honey is sugar, which can adhere to teeth and damage enamel.

It is recommended to choose natural honey and avoid consuming it on an empty stomach, as it can cause hunger pangs, nausea, and slight drops in blood pressure.
