Why women need to replenish energy after intimacy

After intimacy, a woman's body expends energy; replenishing fluids, having a protein-rich snack, and getting adequate rest aid recovery and reduce fatigue.

Pharmacist Do Xuan Hoa, from the Medical Information Center at Tam Anh General Hospital TP HCM, states that in women, the brain - pituitary gland - ovaries form the HPG endocrine axis. This axis regulates sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which in turn affect the menstrual cycle, libido, and sexual response. During sexual activity, this system coordinates with the brain, nervous system, and many other hormones.

During intimacy, heart rate and breathing increase, with multiple muscle groups in the pelvis, abdomen, back, and legs actively engaged. Upon reaching orgasm, cardiovascular indicators may rise before gradually returning to resting levels. Therefore, post-coital fatigue in women does not imply "weakness". The body undergoes physical activity and must adjust a series of physiological responses after intimacy.

Following orgasm, prolactin levels significantly increase in women and can remain elevated for about one hour. Oxytocin also contributes to the post-orgasm response, alongside changes in the autonomic nervous system, helping the body transition from arousal to relaxation. Consequently, feeling relaxed, wanting to lie down, or experiencing drowsiness after intimacy are common reactions.

The post-coital state is also influenced by emotions and psychology. Feelings of closeness, safety, connection, or stress relief can promote a state of relaxation.

After intimacy, the body primarily needs water, appropriate nutrition, and rest. A light snack containing carbohydrates and protein, such as yogurt with fruit or eggs with bread, can help the body feel more comfortable. Women should rest, relax, breathe slowly, and get adequate sleep to help regulate a stable endocrine system, thereby maintaining a steady physical state.

Mild fatigue or drowsiness after intimacy is generally not concerning if it quickly returns to normal. However, if fatigue is excessive, lasts for many hours, or is accompanied by dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, fainting, or severe headaches, women should seek medical examination to determine the cause.

Pharmacist Hoa advises that for balanced marital life and overall health, women should undergo regular health check-ups and maintain a scientific lifestyle, diet, and exercise regimen. Some supportive measures, such as regularly supplementing with natural essences like Lepidium Meyenii and P. Leucotomos, which contain many minerals and vitamins, can help restore the activity of the brain - pituitary gland - ovarian axis, regulating the balance of the three important hormones: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. This can help women improve their physiological function and enhance overall health.
