On January 21, Hanoi City Police announced that the Security Investigation Agency is investigating a case of "abuse of power and position to appropriate assets" at the National High-Performance Sports Training Center, which operates under the Sports Authority of Vietnam, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Initial investigations revealed that from 2020 to late 2023, some coaches and athletes at the center were allegedly required to return overtime training pay that had already been disbursed. Police urged these individuals, and anyone else previously asked to return other irregular funds, to contact the Security Investigation Agency for questioning.
Earlier in 2024, a former gymnast alleged that they had to pay 10% of their prize money to coaches after winning medals, 30% to 50% of immediate cash bonuses, and make monthly contributions to an unauthorized fund.
The athlete also claimed they were required to clock in for overtime despite not actually training. After receiving these allowances, 50% had to be returned to coaches for a team fund, ostensibly for professional activities and internal/external relations. However, establishing separate funds within sports teams has long been strictly prohibited.
Following the controversy, some coaches were disciplined and removed from the national team.
