Durian seller fined 7,5 million VND after market dispute in Da Nang

A durian vendor operating near the Son Tra night market has been fined by police for urban order violations following an argument with a tourist over fruit weight.

On 8/7, leaders of An Hai Ward Police announced they issued an administrative penalty totaling 7,5 million VND to Mr. Thanh, aged 50, who temporarily resides in An Khe ward. The fine comes after an incident at the Son Tra night market involving a dispute with a tourist.

Authorities identified two specific violations committed by Mr. Thanh: parking his vehicle on the road, which obstructed traffic, and engaging in street vending on roads where such sales are strictly prohibited. In addition to the monetary fine, police temporarily seized his motorcycle registration certificate as a preventative measure.

At the police station, Mr. Thanh admitted his wrongdoing. He signed a commitment pledging not to repeat street vending activities in front of the Son Tra night market or anywhere within An Hai ward.

The incident gained public attention after a video, recorded by a tourist on the evening of 30/6, circulated on social media. The footage showed a transaction where Mr. Thanh weighed a durian and charged for 4 kg. However, the buyer disputed this, claiming the durian actually weighed only about 1,5-1,7 kg.

During the heated exchange, the seller refused to acknowledge any error in weighing. His perceived inappropriate attitude and language caused distress to witnesses and was deemed to negatively impact Da Nang's local tourism image. Following the incident, An Hai Ward Police invited Mr. Thanh to the station for questioning and to draw up an official report.

Mr. Thanh's illegal street vending activities occurred amidst Da Nang's intensified efforts to tighten urban order. The Da Nang City People's Committee had previously issued Plan No. 109/KH-UBND, outlining measures for managing and ensuring urban order and promoting a civilized urban lifestyle. This plan explicitly prohibits the use of sidewalks and roadways for illegal business activities, aiming to ensure safe pedestrian spaces and preserve the city's aesthetics.
