On 12/7, Waddel, 49, was ordered by the court to pay the victim 1,000 NZD (approximately 15 million VND) for emotional distress. This followed his guilty plea to poisoning with intent to annoy, an offense carrying a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
Police records indicate that the two had been in a relationship and broke up last year. Despite the separation, they continued to live in separate houses on the same property.
Waddel had permission to enter his ex-girlfriend's main house to do laundry.
Around noon on 9/6, he went to a local pharmacy and bought a tube of hair removal cream. He then broke into his ex-girlfriend's house while she was away, entered the bathroom, located her shampoo bottle, and poured the cream into it.
That day, the woman washed her hair and immediately noticed a strange sensation on her scalp, an unusual smell, and a lack of normal lather. When she washed her hair again, her scalp felt raw, and her hair began to fall out.
Coincidentally, she found a receipt for hair removal cream on the ground near the trash at her house—a product she clearly had not purchased.
She then contacted the police, stating her suspicion that her ex-boyfriend had harmed her.
When questioned, Waddel admitted to the act. He explained that he was unhappy with the breakup and his ex-girlfriend's behavior, and committed the act out of spite.
