Hanoi police address traffic accident on Nguyen Huy Tu street

Hanoi police clarify a traffic accident that occurred one year ago on Nguyen Huy Tu street, resulting in one fatality, and urge the public to be vigilant and refrain from sharing unverified information.

On 17/8, VTV broadcast a report exceeding six minutes on the BMW X3 driver who caused an accident on Nguyen Huy Tu street on 30/5/2025. The incident involved a father and his 18-year-old daughter on a motorbike, leaving the father injured and his daughter deceased.

The driver of the car was Nguyen Sy Cuong, former Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the 14th National Assembly. The Investigation Police Agency Office of Hanoi City Police investigated the incident and communicated the findings to the victim's family.

Colonel Nguyen Duc Long, Deputy Director of Hanoi City Police, stated that a comprehensive evaluation of evidence led investigators to determine Mr. Cuong violated road traffic regulations, as per Clause 1, Article 260 of the Penal Code.

Colonel Long added that Mr. Cuong honestly admitted his actions and actively mitigated the consequences. The victim's family acknowledged his efforts and submitted a petition to exempt him from criminal prosecution.

VTV's news report broadcast on 17/8.

The investigation determined that Mr. Cuong had no alcohol in his blood and held a valid driver's license. Colonel Long stated, "Based on evidence and documentation, and a comprehensive, objective assessment, along with a comparison with legal regulations, it was determined that Mr. Cuong met the conditions to be exempt from criminal prosecution."

Hanoi Police and the Hanoi People's Procuracy conducted a scene investigation, examined vehicle traces and impact directions, and recorded statements from all relevant parties. VTV reported, "The accident was determined to have occurred due to Mr. Cuong's driving in the wrong lane."

A representative of the victim's family agreed with the investigation's findings, expressing no complaints or questions regarding the resolution. The family expressed gratitude for the online community's concern and hoped to close the matter soon to resume a normal life.

Do not share unverified information

The VTV report highlighted that the accident on Nguyen Huy Tu street was resolved according to legal procedures, with the victim's family agreeing to the outcome. However, hostile and reactionary forces have recently exploited this incident, along with other administrative and criminal violations, to repeatedly post false information and create public confusion.

Major General Nguyen Quoc Toan, Chief of Staff and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Security, stated that the Ministry has detected dangerous plots and activities by hostile and reactionary forces and bad elements to exploit situations and incite unrest. The Viet Tan terrorist organization, in particular, has deliberately linked isolated incidents with other cases to influence and attract youth and students, aiming to cause public disorder.

Given this situation, the Ministry of Public Security urges citizens to remain vigilant. Everyone, especially young people, should build "natural resistance" when participating in cyberspace; refrain from sharing unverified information and avoid being drawn into activities that disrupt public order or violate the law.
