Japanese police officer disciplined for playing claw machines during work hours

A 50-year-old male detective with the Shizuoka Prefectural Police faced a 10% salary reduction for repeatedly playing claw machines at shopping malls during work hours.

The Shizuoka Prefectural Police Department confirmed the officer committed these violations eight times over approximately five months.

The officer, a member of the Mobile Investigation Team within the Criminal Investigation Division, was able to indulge in the games due to the nature of his work. His unit operates outside headquarters, patrolling in plain clothes and unmarked vehicles to identify criminals, respond to crime scenes, and undertake initial actions such as securing the area and preserving evidence. Due to the specifics of their duties, team members are granted greater autonomy while on assignment.

According to authorities, the officer admitted to playing claw machines while on duty and offered an apology. However, he claimed these incidents occurred during his free time, when he was not actively engaged in investigations.

His misconduct extended to abusing his authority by instructing a sergeant, approximately 30 years old, to win plush toys for him. When the subordinate failed to secure the desired item, the officer reportedly scolded him.

The officer also falsified his time at game centers, logging it as overtime to receive approximately 3,700 JPY (about 600,000 VND). He used this falsely obtained money to purchase a large plush toy.

This incident follows another disciplinary action by the Shizuoka Prefectural Police Department last month, when a 40-year-old sergeant was reprimanded for leaving his firearm on a shelf in a public restroom.
