Case files indicate Thinh had a conflict with a 53-year-old man from Phu Khuong ward, Vinh Long province. On 14/4/2022, Thinh spotted the man riding a motorbike in Ward 6, Ben Tre City, Ben Tre province (now Son Dong ward, Vinh Long province). Thinh, along with a group of about 10 friends armed with knives, pursued the victim in a car and on motorbikes. The group rammed the victim's vehicle. Thinh then repeatedly stabbed the victim, who collapsed on the road. The group fled. The victim was taken to the emergency room by residents but succumbed to his injuries.
The following morning, police arrested many accomplices. Thinh, however, went to Bien Hoa Central Mental Hospital, attempting to be admitted for treatment. The Ben Tre Provincial Police Investigation Agency identified, arrested, and charged him with murder. During the subsequent investigation, Thinh escaped while undergoing compulsory treatment at Dong Nai Mental Hospital. The Investigation Agency then issued a special dangerous wanted notice for him.
Following a period of persuasion by the police, Thinh surrendered on 14/3.
