The theft came to light on 30/4 when a 58-year-old volunteer arrived at the temple for cleaning. He discovered a broken door latch, indicating a forced entry.
Inside the main hall, the volunteer found that many bronze artifacts were missing. These included an incense burner, candle holders, 8 swords, and a tea set complete with 6 copper cups.
Following an investigation, police identified Trong as the suspect. They launched a manhunt, leading to his recent arrest while he was hiding in Vinh Long province.
During questioning, Trong confessed to the theft. He admitted to taking a gold necklace with a Buddha pendant, weighing one tael, from a Buddha statue within the temple. He then sold the gold to a second-hand shop in Thu Dau Mot ward.
Authorities have since recovered most of the stolen items, which have been returned to the temple's management.
