Man who attempted to snatch police gun surrenders

After 16 months on the run for assault, attempting to snatch a police officer's weapon, and ramming a vehicle into law enforcement, Do Thanh Tung has surrendered.

On 25/2, the Da Nang City Police Criminal Investigation Department announced that Do Thanh Tung, 39, residing in Ngu Hanh Son ward, had surrendered. He was wanted under a warrant for intentionally causing injury and resisting public officers.

According to the investigation, in the early hours of 3/7/2024, at the Sarang Night pub on Tran Van Tru street (then in Binh Thuan ward, Hai Chau district), Khang, the pub manager, approached a table to offer beer to a group of customers. Tung then struck him with a glass, causing a wound approximately 5 cm long on his forehead, which required 10 stitches.

When Binh Thuan Ward Police arrived and invited those involved for questioning, Tung and his group refused to comply, instead yelling insults and challenges.

Authorities determined that while officers were requesting cooperation, Tung attempted to hit and snatch a police officer's gun but was unsuccessful. Nguyen Van Nam then intervened, pushing and kicking the officer on duty and also trying to grab the weapon.

Simultaneously, Pham Tan Thanh drove a motorbike, carrying Tung as they attempted to flee. When intercepted, Thanh intentionally drove the vehicle into the officers before accelerating and escaping. Despite police firing warning shots into the air, the group continued their resistance.

In 10/2024, the Hai Chau District Police Investigation Agency initiated criminal proceedings and charged Tung, Nam, and Thanh. Nam was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison, and Thanh to 4 years. Tung, however, fled, leading to an arrest warrant issued on 17/10/2024.

After a period of hiding, Tung surrendered to the police. The investigation agency is currently completing the necessary procedures for his reception and processing according to regulations.
