Neighbor steals ATM cards, guesses passwords

Vo Son Lam, 21, repeatedly stole ATM cards from neighbors and guessed their passwords to withdraw money.

On 9/5, Lam, a resident of Ninh Chau commune, was temporarily detained by Quang Tri Provincial Police on charges of property theft.

Lam has two previous convictions for the same offense.

Two days prior, Ninh Chau Commune Police received a report from a 45-year-old woman in Hoa Binh village. She stated her ATM card was missing and money had been withdrawn from her account. Following an investigation, police identified Vo Son Lam, a resident of the same village, as the suspect.

Authorities allege that Lam repeatedly stole ATM cards from neighbors. He managed to guess the simple passwords set by cardholders and subsequently withdrew a total of over 48 million VND from various ATMs.

Police advise residents to safeguard their ATM cards, avoiding leaving them in easily accessible places. They also recommend regularly checking bank accounts and subscribing to balance change notifications to promptly detect any unusual transactions.

Furthermore, the public is urged to avoid using easily guessable passwords such as birth dates, personal information, or simple sequences like 123456, to prevent funds from being stolen from their accounts.
