The incident came to light at noon on 3/5, when Ms. Thuy, 32, a resident of Nong Son commune, reported to the police that her piggy bank, containing approximately 35 million Vietnamese dong (VND) in savings, had been swapped.
Following nearly two hours of investigation, police identified a female neighbor, four years older than the victim, as the primary suspect.
During questioning, the suspect confessed that on 2/5, while visiting Ms. Thuy's home, she saw the piggy bank in the bedroom and conceived the idea to steal it. To avoid detection, the neighbor purchased another piggy bank that was similar in shape and color.
Later that same evening, taking advantage of Ms. Thuy's family being away from home, the suspect secretly broke in and swapped the piggy banks.
A search of the suspect's residence led police to recover 37 million VND, identified as the stolen funds from Ms. Thuy's piggy bank.
