In court, Trong expressed remorse, stating that he lost control in a moment of anger and hoped for a reduced sentence to atone for his actions sooner.
The Judicial Council deemed the defendant's actions a violation of human life, necessitating a severe sentence as a deterrent.
According to the indictment, Trong's family lived with his maternal uncle, Lo Van Mon, 37, at their home in Tan Sang village, Son Lam commune. In late 2024, while Trong was working as a laborer in Nghi Loc district, Mon sold ancestral land left by Trong's maternal grandfather without informing his nephew. This led to frequent conflicts between them.
Around 5 PM on 31/7/2025, Trong and Mon continued to argue loudly about the sale of the ancestral land. Mon told him: "Sell the remaining piece of ancestral land from our grandparents in the back and go live somewhere else." Believing his uncle wanted to evict him, Trong became agitated, ran into his bedroom, grabbed a knife more than 20 cm long, and stabbed Mon once in the head.
During a struggle with Mon, Trong stabbed him again. The victim died shortly after. Trong then surrendered to the police.
