Nine leaders of World Cup betting ring with over 200 billion VND arrested

Criminal police teams simultaneously raided nine locations, arresting Chau Chi Phuoc and his accomplices for organizing football betting during the World Cup 2026 season.

Ha Tinh Provincial Police on 17/7 prosecuted Phuoc, 35, a resident of Lam Dong, and eight others for gambling and organizing gambling, under Articles 321 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The investigation revealed that in early May, before the World Cup 2026 commenced, Phuoc contacted an individual nicknamed "Min" in TP HCM to acquire a high-level betting account on the Bong88 system. Phuoc then divided this account into multiple smaller tiers, distributing them among his subordinates to manage and organize betting for participants, thereby generating profit.

In early 6/2026, through online surveillance, the Criminal Police Department of Ha Tinh Provincial Police uncovered the ring and launched a special investigation.

In mid-July, authorities mobilized over 50 officers, forming nine task forces, to simultaneously arrest Phuoc and his associates.

Authorities determined that from 6/2026 until its dismantlement, the betting ring had transacted over 200 billion VND in football bets.

Authorities are expanding the investigation into the case.
