Senior US prosecutor suspended over alleged affairs with suspects

Camille Johnston, 46, is accused of abusing her position to maintain romantic relationships with three men, one of whom was under investigation for sexual assault.

Camille Johnston, 46, faced a recommendation for suspension from the Missouri Attorney General's Office, citing that she had "lost her fitness to hold the office of prosecutor". A judge subsequently approved the temporary suspension pending investigation.

According to court documents, Johnston had a romantic relationship with an individual identified by the initials "J.G.", who was being prosecuted by the Ray County Prosecutor's Office for sexual assault charges. She allegedly traveled to Mississippi to meet J.G. after he left the area, then holidayed with him in Florida.

The Attorney General's Office stated that Johnston knew J.G.'s whereabouts but failed to inform authorities, creating a conflict of interest as he was a defendant in a case handled by her own office.

Johnston is also accused of having a romantic relationship with a Ray County attorney, identified by the initials "T.T.", who had defended and was defending multiple defendants in cases she prosecuted. According to the documents, in these cases, Johnston should have recused herself and requested the appointment of a special prosecutor.

In another allegation, a former Prosecutor's Office employee reported being fired after revealing a relationship between Johnston and a domestic violence suspect. Johnston was later removed from the case when police discovered the situation and requested a different prosecutor be assigned. She is also accused of concealing this relationship from the victim, Ray County employees, and the court.

Additionally, Johnston is alleged to have created a "fearful and stressful" work environment due to frequent outbursts and abusive behavior.

In its court filing, the Missouri Attorney General's Office stated that Johnston may have committed several criminal acts related to these relationships, including corruption and obstruction of prosecution.

According to the Attorney General's Office, the allegations "at a minimum, create clear indications of conflicts of interest".
