Six individuals were detained and questioned following Maria's death in Limeira, near Sao Paulo, on 13/6. Three instructors, Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Vitor de Freitas Goncalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, face murder charges.
The three men are reportedly visible in a viral video, lifting Maria and pushing her from the 40 m high Skeleton bridge. She fell to her death, as her safety harness was not secured.
Two of the three instructors fled immediately after the incident, as Maria's fiance watched in horror.
A military helicopter tracked the two fugitives to a nearby forest.
Police reported that two primary suspects claimed "temporary amnesia," stating they could not recall fastening the safety harness. "They said they didn't remember where or when the mistake occurred, or who was responsible for attaching the harness but failed to do so," stated officer Andrea Dantas Levy. "The third person, who held Maria's legs, claimed they were only called to assist with the push."
The three other detainees, staff members responsible for distributing wristbands near the bungee jumping area, have since been released.

Maria and her fiance purchased a guided tour from a private company, which included bungee jumping. The jump cost 36 USD, with an additional 30 USD fee to use a company-provided GoPro camera to record the experience. The camera was not recovered at the base of the bridge.
Local authorities confirmed the bungee jumping company operated without a license. They asserted the fatal accident resulted from inadequate inspection and supervision of safety harness placement prior to the jump.
A nurse who happened to be nearby and rushed to Maria's aid reported that the victim was still alive immediately after the fall but succumbed to multiple injuries at the scene. Her fiance required emergency hospitalization due to shock.
All three primary suspects remain in pre-trial detention on murder charges. Judge Paulo Henrique Stahlberg Natal cited their attempt to flee and concerns that "their release could lead to a repeat of similar dangerous behavior" as reasons.
If convicted, they could face prison sentences ranging from 6 to 30 years.

The Skeleton bridge, built 30 years ago for a defunct railway line, has become a draw for extreme sports enthusiasts.
The Limeira City Council intends to file a complaint with Brazil's federal government concerning the lack of safety and security around the abandoned bridge, despite its well-documented inherent risks.
