According to the investigation, on the night of 12/7, Dang Huu Thang, 20, and his group of youths rode six motorcycles through the streets of Pleiku. Some vehicles carried three people, without helmets, and had their license plates covered with masks. One group member carried a homemade knife and a crate of beer bottles, distributing two to three bottles to each passenger.
While on Ba Trieu street, Thang's group encountered Thuy's group, consisting of five youths on two motorcycles, traveling in the opposite direction. Both groups also had masked license plates. Thang drove his motorcycle between Thuy's two bikes and revved his engine provocatively.
As Thuy's group pursued them, Thang's group began throwing beer bottles. Thuy's group continued the chase, retaliating by throwing bricks.

During the chase, a motorcycle from Thang's group, driven by Gia Khang, 14, and carrying two friends, all without helmets, sped away. The motorcycle veered onto the sidewalk and crashed into a house wall on Nguyen Chi Thanh street. The accident resulted in the deaths of all three occupants.
At the police station, Thuy's group admitted that Thuy had thrown one brick at Khang's motorcycle, causing it to lose control and crash.
