Two hotel owners arrested for illegally sheltering group of Chinese nationals

Nguyen Tien Sang and Nguyen Van Dang, two hotel owners in Phu Quoc, are accused of providing lodging to a group of Chinese nationals despite knowing they entered the country unlawfully.

An Giang Provincial Police arrested Nguyen Tien Sang and Nguyen Van Dang, both 51, on 15/7. The two hotel owners face charges of organizing for others to stay in Vietnam illegally.

According to the investigation, in early July, Duong Dong Port Border Guard, in coordination with functional forces, arrested four Chinese nationals: Li Zhong Guo, Chai Ren Shang, Xu Xin Wen, and Zhang Wen Bo, as they attempted to leave Phu Quoc by ferry. The group could not produce valid entry documents and admitted to entering Vietnam illegally from Cambodia before traveling to Phu Quoc to establish a high-tech fraud system. Initially, police determined they were directly involved in an online fraud case.

Expanding the investigation, authorities identified that since 20/6, the four suspects had been residing in a rented apartment managed by Nguyen Van Sang. Sang operates a business involving airline tickets and tourism services, and he rented numerous apartments and villas for accommodation. According to the investigation, this apartment was initially rented to a Chinese national (identity unknown), then transferred to another person before the four suspects rented it.

Despite knowing the group had entered illegally, Sang agreed to provide lodging for personal gain and fear of contract cancellation. He also failed to declare their presence or notify authorities as required.

In late June, upon noticing increased inspections of lodging establishments by functional forces in the area, the four suspects left Sang's apartment and moved to rent an apartment in the Sonasea area, managed by Nguyen Van Dang.

Similar to Sang, despite knowing the tenants had entered and were staying illegally, Dang still rented to them for illicit gain. Authorities further accused Dang of assisting the four suspects in reaching the ferry terminal to leave Phu Quoc.

At the investigating agency, Sang and Dang admitted to all criminal acts.
