Julia Varvaro is currently on paid administrative leave as an internal investigation proceeds into allegations of a "sugar daddy - sugar baby" relationship, extravagant spending, and controlled substance use. The probe was launched after Robert B., a man claiming to be her "sugar daddy," filed a formal complaint with the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG). On 22/4, DHS announced that Julia Varvaro "no longer holds the position of deputy assistant secretary at DHS."

Robert, a divorced business executive significantly older than Varvaro, claims he spent 40,000 USD on her during their three-month relationship, which began after they met on the Hinge dating app in 12/2025. He later discovered Varvaro had a profile under the name "Alessia" on a website for "mutually beneficial" relationships with "masculine men."
Before their dispute, Robert stated he took Varvaro on luxurious getaways to Aruba, Italy, and Switzerland, purchasing a 3,500 USD Bottega handbag and high-end Cartier jewelry for her. During these trips, Robert claims Varvaro boasted about perks she received due to her government position.
In February, Varvaro allegedly began pressuring Robert to transfer 2,000 USD to cover half her rent during a DHS shutdown. She then reportedly tried to guilt him into obtaining a credit card in her name. Robert stated he was met with a cold reception after declining her request.
By late March, Varvaro urged Robert to buy her a 1,000 USD pair of sandals and a 2,000 USD Emsculpt fat reduction device, reportedly becoming angry when he did not transfer the money immediately. In early April, Varvaro texted Robert, saying, "I like to be taken care of, and you're not doing that for me, so I'm not sure this relationship is a good fit."

According to Robert, Varvaro explicitly told him that 40,000 USD worth of jewelry on her hands and ears were gifts from wealthy partners. In his complaint, Robert expressed belief that Varvaro was "experiencing financial difficulties" and that her actions "pose a serious risk to national security." Robert also stated he witnessed Varvaro use cannabis nearly a dozen times and Xanax for recreational purposes.
In a media interview, Varvaro denied all allegations, describing the complaint as "a crazy ex-boyfriend fabricating stories for revenge after being dumped." She maintained that traveling with a boyfriend or requesting a credit card in her name was "normal." A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General stated that the agency "has a long-standing policy of neither confirming nor denying the existence of any specific investigation" and could not provide further details or comment on the matter.
