A photo helps reunite family after 70 years of separation

Helping a tourist take a photo at Lugu Lake, Chen coincidentally realized this person was a relative his family had lost contact with before 1949.

On the morning of 9/7, during a business trip to Lijiang, Yunnan province, Chen, who lives in Shanghai, visited Lugu Lake to watch the sunrise. There, he helped a male tourist take a photo. The two then connected on the WeChat application to share the pictures.

During their conversation, the tourist shared that his surname was Fei, his ancestral home was Pu Yuan town in Zhejiang province, and he currently resided in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Recognizing these three details matched his own family's origins, Chen informed his father for verification.

After cross-verifying the names of previous generation members, both parties confirmed their kinship. Chen's paternal grandfather and Fei's father were biological brothers. The two lost contact before 1949. The elder brother moved to Taiwan, while the younger brother remained and was adopted by a Chen family.

"Among more than one billion people, we coincidentally met at Lugu Lake, thousands of kilometers from our hometowns. This coincidence is hard for me to believe," Chen stated.

When Chen shared the incident in his family chat group, everyone was surprised. Chen's father also rediscovered a letter sent by Fei's father from 1991. In the letter, the uncle in Taiwan asked someone to deliver 200 USD to his younger brother on the mainland.

Due to their differing travel itineraries, Chen and Fei did not have much time to spend in Yunnan. The two agreed to organize an official reunion when Fei returns to mainland China.

"My uncle said he would visit my family next time. The bond between our two sides will now be maintained by our generation," Chen shared.
