Driver brakes twice to save lives before sudden death

Suffering a heart attack while driving, bus driver Zhou Yu managed to brake twice, bringing the vehicle to a stop and ensuring the safety of 12 passengers before collapsing.

On the evening of 15/6, 43-year-old bus driver Zhou Yu was driving through Zhoushan city, Zhejiang province, when he suddenly fell ill. Onboard surveillance cameras recorded his 2-minute and 20-second effort to control the situation.

At 6:33 PM, a heart attack caused Zhou Yu to slump forward. Within 16 seconds, his body slumped four times before he managed to straighten up. He pressed the brake pedal, bringing the bus to a stop at an intersection and maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. His body then leaned back into the driver's seat. Approximately 43 seconds later, he strained forward again, pressing the brake pedal firmly once more to activate the vehicle's full braking system. The driver then collapsed, but his right foot remained pressed firmly on the brake until he lost consciousness completely.

Onboard dashcam footage captures driver Zhou Yu's attempt to pull the bus to the side of the road before losing consciousness on the evening of 15/6. Sohu.

There were 12 passengers on the bus, mainly lecturers and students from Zhejiang Ocean University. Noticing the situation, lecturer Zheng Shengxiong, who was sitting in the back row, came forward to check. Finding the driver unconscious, he called for emergency services. The students on the bus quickly contacted the police.

Authorities arrived and moved Zhou Yu to the side of the road. Medical personnel performed cardiac compressions before transferring him to the hospital. At 11:17 PM that same day, the driver passed away. Doctors diagnosed him with acute coronary syndrome, leading to a heart attack.

Zhang Ye, head of the safety department at Zhoushan Public Transport Company, stated that modern bus automatic parking brake systems are activated when the driver presses the brake pedal deeply. "He prevented the dangerous situation of the bus rolling freely", Zhang Ye said.

Driver Zhou Yu is removed from the bus by authorities before being transported to the hospital on the evening of 15/6. Sohu.

Driver Zhou Yu had 22 years of driving experience, covering 340,000 kilometers. Joining the company in 2019, he maintained a record of no accidents or violations and earned the title of safe driver for seven consecutive years.

Colleagues reported that Zhou Yu underwent annual health check-ups. Doctors noted slightly elevated blood sugar levels but no other medical conditions. Prior to his shift on 15/6, the driver's daily life was normal.

Zhou Yu's passing leaves a significant void, as he was the main provider for his mother, who is nearly 70 years old, his wife, and their elementary school-aged son. Immediately after the incident, the bus company sent staff to assist the family with funeral arrangements and to honor his contributions.
