Experts reveal how to thoroughly clean cucumbers of dirt and chemicals

Washing cucumbers under running water is the simplest way to remove dirt. For a deeper clean, experts recommend soaking them in a baking soda solution.

Cucumbers, containing about 96% water and few calories, are a versatile addition to summer meals. According to Kimberly Dong, an associate professor of nutrition and public health at Tufts University School of Medicine in the US, cucumbers are an excellent choice due to their high water content and fiber. To maximize these benefits, proper cleaning before consumption is essential.

Wash under running water for at least one minute

Debbie Petitpain, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in the US, states that the simplest and most effective method is to wash cucumbers under running water. She advises holding the cucumber under the tap for at least one minute, gently rubbing the surface by hand to remove any clinging soil or debris.

"If you only have time for this step, you can still feel confident using them," Petitpain said.

Use a brush to clean off wax

For a more thorough cleaning, Petitpain suggests using a soft-bristled brush specifically designed for vegetables. Many cucumbers are coated with a protective wax layer, which can easily trap dirt or pesticide residues. When scrubbing, pay attention to both ends of the cucumber, as these areas tend to accumulate the most grime. Besides a dedicated food brush, home cooks can also use a loofah for similar effect.

If you dislike the wax coating, you can peel the cucumber, although the skin contains beneficial fiber and micronutrients.

Soak in baking soda

For those seeking an even deeper clean, Petitpain recommends soaking cucumbers in a baking soda solution.

To do this, dissolve about one teaspoon of baking soda in each liter of water, then soak the cucumbers for 10 to 15 minutes.

Some studies indicate that baking soda can help break down certain pesticide residues on the surface of fruits and vegetables. After soaking, rinse the cucumbers thoroughly under clean running water to completely remove any baking soda.

Wash only before eating

Doctor Don Schaffner, a professor at Rutgers University, advises against washing cucumbers too early and then storing them in the refrigerator. Residual moisture on the surface can create conditions for bacteria and mold to grow, causing the cucumbers to spoil quickly. After washing, dry them with a paper towel or a clean kitchen towel before preparation.

Schaffner recommends choosing firm, undamaged cucumbers. After purchase, store them in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator at around 5 degrees Celsius. Avoid excessively low temperatures, as cucumbers can freeze, diminishing their quality.
