Rekindling an old flame after 25 years out of touch

After parting ways in 1997 and experiencing their own marital breakdowns, Nicole and Eric unexpectedly reconnected after 25 years to continue their unfinished love story.

In 6/1995, Nicole, a lawyer in San Francisco, and Eric, a recent graduate teacher, met at Salt Lake City airport station.

Six months after they met, Nicole gave up her apartment in San Francisco and drove with Eric from Colorado to Costa Rica, before heading to Alaska for work.

Their nomadic lifestyle did not keep them settled for long. In 1997, Eric took a teaching job in a remote village in Alaska, while Nicole returned to San Francisco. That same year, she announced she had a new partner, and the two officially ended contact. After the breakup, each started their own families and had children.

In 2017, Nicole divorced. She found her ex-boyfriend's email address and sent a message but received no reply, as Eric was married at the time. Five years later, Eric's marriage also ended. In 12/2022, he found Nicole's phone number online and called her.

"When I saw the screen show a call from Kodiak (Alaska), I immediately knew it was Eric", Nicole stated.

A few months after long phone calls lasting all night, the two booked tickets to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This was their first in-person meeting since their breakup in 2/1997. At the airport, they embraced warmly. "25 years had passed, but she was still the same, running right into my arms when we met again", Eric said.

After the Mexico trip, Nicole flew to Kodiak to visit Eric. Initially, she only planned to stay temporarily, but then decided to remain and integrate into her boyfriend's daily life.

Moving in together, Nicole stated that she does not regret the 25 years they spent apart, because past experiences and the birth of their respective children were valuable to them both.

"In the 1990s, we could not be together because it was not the right time. But now, after all these years, everything is complete", she said.
