Running out of money while stranded in a Dubai hotel

A holiday transformed into a financial nightmare for a British couple forced to spend thousands of pounds extending their hotel stay, stranded in Dubai amid ongoing conflict.

Lily Mann, 25, and her boyfriend, James Shires, 33, arrived in Dubai for a holiday on 26/2. Their plans were disrupted when Etihad Airways canceled their return flight to Manchester, UK, citing security concerns.

The couple faced two options: purchase one-way tickets costing over GBP 10,000 (more than USD 13,400) each, or continue waiting indefinitely. Unable to afford the remaining business class tickets, they were compelled to stay.

Unable to leave, Mann and Shires had to extend their hotel stay, incurring an additional cost of over GBP 3,000 for living expenses and pet boarding fees back home. Their attempts to contact the travel agency failed, as airport security denied access to those without tickets. The airline announced a replacement flight scheduled for 14/3, over a week later than planned, but this itinerary remains uncertain.

Over their four-year relationship, the couple had visited Dubai 10 times. However, this was their first experience of insecurity, with alarm sirens sounding continuously. "Thick black smoke and loud explosions ripped through the sky just as we were eating breakfast," Mann recounted.

The resort's luxury was replaced by urgent evacuations. The experience of seeking shelter on a glass floor in a shopping mall when alarms blared left them both traumatized. Currently, despite trying to maintain their routine of walks and coffee, they remain constantly alert, ready to run for cover and avoid windows.

To make ends meet, Mann and Shires had to drastically cut back on spending to preserve their dwindling funds. "I just long to be home immediately to reunite with my two beloved dogs," the British tourist shared.
