The 'whirlwind' romance of an American groom and a Vietnamese woman

Paul Drake traveled to Vietnam to ease the sorrow of losing his wife, unexpectedly finding a new life partner during his trip.

In summer 2025, Paul Drake, 59, from Iowa, United States, embarked on a solo trip to Vietnam. Nearing his departure, he explored TP HCM and stopped at a small roadside cafe. There, he was immediately captivated by the greeting of the owner, Tran Thi Ha.

"It was like love at first sight. I paused for a few seconds before going in to order a cocktail," Paul recalled. The two began a conversation that evening.

In contrast to the American visitor's immediate interest, Ha, 42, remained composed. Initially, the man, nearly 2 meters tall, was not her type. However, his kind demeanor and gentle way of speaking put her at ease. Their conversation extended late into the night. As Paul prepared to leave, he lingered to ask for her phone number.

Ha understood Paul's intentions but did not foresee the relationship progressing far. She had experienced five unfulfilled relationships, some lasting up to 9 years without leading to marriage. Consequently, she had decided to set aside romance and focus on her work. Yet, Paul's sincere affection gradually changed her perspective.

During his remaining days in TP HCM, Paul visited Ha's cafe almost daily. "He spoke softly, always let me choose dishes when we went out, and followed all my suggestions," Ha recounted. Paul's kindness and gentleness resonated with the Vietnamese woman, reminding her of her own father's personality.

Upon returning to the United States to care for his two children and 87-year-old mother, Paul continued to think of the cafe owner. He messaged her daily, recalling shared memories like their first time eating durian and mam tom (fermented shrimp paste), often laughing to himself.

A month later, he made the decision to return to TP HCM. "I didn't want to just guess emotions through messages. I wanted to meet again to see where this would go," he stated.

In 6/2025, Paul returned, staying in Vietnam for over two weeks. His attentiveness was evident in small gestures. One evening, Ha returned from church to find the floor dry, the kitchen counter spotless, the trash can carefully scrubbed, and Paul tidying up belongings. Seeing her, he simply smiled and said, "You just rest."

That simple moment deeply moved Ha. The more they talked, the more Paul recognized a loyal person beneath her straightforward exterior, especially after learning she had sheltered a Japanese friend for two months in her small rented room.

At the end of his trip, the couple flew to Bali, Indonesia. One chilly morning at a mountain resort, Ha shivered, wrapping herself in a blanket while having breakfast by the pool. Amidst this setting, she unexpectedly proposed engagement. In her 40s, Ha felt she could no longer hesitate.

Faced with this "reverse proposal," Drake accepted without hesitation.

The swift decision to marry surprised both families. Paul's children worried about their father finding a new partner too quickly, while Ha's family in Dong Nai also harbored skepticism. However, the foreign groom's efforts to integrate dispelled their doubts.

During his first visit to Ha's parents in Dong Nai, Drake remained close to Ha. He spoke no Vietnamese, and none of her relatives spoke English. Whenever Ha moved around the house, he awkwardly followed. At one point, Ha suggested he rest in the room, but he waited at the door, unsure what to do next. When the family set up a meal on a mat on the floor, the American man tried to sit cross-legged amidst the family circle. After eating, he took his dishes to wash them himself, happily completing the task despite Ha's younger sister trying to intervene.

The warm rhythm of family life gradually won Paul over. Noticing his future son-in-law often bumped his head due to his height, Ha's father decided to modify a section of the staircase and rebuild the sink for Paul's convenience. "From that moment, I knew I had become part of the Vietnamese family," Paul expressed, moved.

In late 8/2025, Paul, dressed in a traditional ao dai, smiled happily beside Ha at their engagement ceremony. Holding her husband's hand tightly, Ha believed that love always finds a way to appear when one least expects it.
