Matthew Morris, 36, and his wife Shanon in New York decided against buying engagement rings. They spent approximately 300 USD for a tattoo artist to ink a Pokemon symbol on their ring fingers. "Tattooed rings are much cheaper than real diamonds," Morris said. "My wife doesn't like jewelry, so this was the most suitable option."
Lindsay Beck, 42, from California, also chose this option to ease financial burdens. "We don't need to spend 10,000 USD on a ring," Beck stated. "My husband and I would rather use that money for two or three trips each year."

According to a survey by the financial platform Chime, Millennials and Gen Z are changing traditional engagement norms. Approximately 25% of respondents indicated they would consider foregoing wedding rings entirely in favor of finger tattoos.
The report also showed that 30% of couples choose affordable gemstones, and 26% prioritize spending money on shared experiences like travel over luxury jewelry. Social media contributes to this shift, with 61% of users admitting that TikTok and Instagram have reshaped how they plan proposals.
American experts believe this trend represents an emotional shift beyond financial considerations. The eternal symbol of diamonds is gradually being replaced by the "uniqueness" of tattoos.
Doctor Clay Brigance, a psychologist at Shiloh Counseling Center, observed that today's younger generation focuses on personal values rather than adhering to tradition. "A finger tattoo is a significant commitment," Brigance explained, "because it's not something you can take off; it becomes a part of your body."
