1.4 km road along Xuyen Tam Canal opens to traffic

The first 1.4 km section of road along Xuyen Tam Canal is now open, providing convenient travel for residents and transforming an area once marked by dilapidated housing and pollution.

The canal area has been transformed by the renovation.

The Xuyen Tam Canal dredging, environmental improvement, and infrastructure construction project spans over 8.8 km. It includes a main route of nearly 6.7 km, stretching from Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal to Vam Thuat River, and three branches (Cau Son, Binh Trieu, Binh Loi) totaling over 2.2 km.

The newly opened road section, approximately 1.4 km long, is located on the left bank of the canal. It stretches from Luong Ngoc Quyen Street to Vam Thuat River, within An Nhon Ward (formerly Go Vap District). This marks the first section of the project to be put into use.

With a total investment exceeding 17,230 billion VND from the state budget, the project allocates most funds to site clearance. This initiative represents one of Ho Chi Minh City's large-scale urban and environmental improvement efforts.

Previously, the area was densely packed with dilapidated houses along the canal, and the environment was polluted. Following project implementation, the road now features two lanes, and a new embankment has been constructed, creating a more open space for the surrounding residential area.

Vehicles move smoothly on the canal-side road, which opened in early September.

The box culvert system is being completed to help drain water and prevent flooding along the canal road.

Some local homes are being renovated alongside the Xuyen Tam Canal road infrastructure.

Residents are constructing homes along the canal-side road following the area's renovation.

According to Duong Van Kim, Vice Chairman of An Nhon Ward People's Committee, package 3 largely traverses the ward, affecting 138 households and organizations. Initial site clearance faced some difficulties but accelerated once residents agreed with the goals of urban improvement and pollution reduction.

“The first section of road to open has improved travel for residents while also enhancing the area's environment and appearance,” Kim stated.

Workers use an excavator to level the ground for canal embankment renovation.

The canal bed will be dredged to a depth of approximately 3.5 m and widened to 20-30 m, combined with the construction of a wastewater and rainwater collection system. Both sides of the canal will feature two-lane roads, sidewalks, parks, and lighting systems.

The project was initially slated for completion in 2028. The investor is developing a plan to accelerate progress, aiming to complete the entire project by late 2027.
