Bac Ninh Provincial Police recently announced a 26 million VND fine and a 10-point deduction from the driver's license of a ride-hailing driver for using a license plate inconsistent with the vehicle's registration. This penalty follows the driver's deliberate attempt to evade traffic cameras by attaching a fake plate to his vehicle.
The investigation began in March when the Bac Ninh Provincial Police's surveillance system detected a car speeding on National Highway 1. An initial review of the data revealed a significant anomaly: the license plate displayed on the speeding vehicle had previously been issued to a different car and was officially recalled after that vehicle's transfer of ownership.
Recognizing this unusual sign, the Bac Ninh Provincial Traffic Police utilized an AI camera system to track the vehicle's movements. The system documented the car appearing on multiple roads throughout Bac Ninh, including instances where it ran red lights. This extensive tracking effort continued for three months, leading to the identification and apprehension of the driver.
On the morning of 21/6, traffic police successfully stopped the car on National Highway 1. During questioning, the driver admitted that after selling his old car, he ordered a fake license plate from an online source. He then attached this plate to his newly acquired vehicle specifically to avoid detection by camera systems, as the new car was, in fact, registered with a different, legitimate license plate.

In addition to the substantial fine and license points deduction, the vehicle was impounded. According to Decree 168/2024, using a fake license plate or one that does not match the vehicle's registration is classified as a serious traffic violation. The penalty for cars ranges from 20 to 26 million VND and includes a 10-point deduction from the driver's license. For motorcycles, the fine is 4 to 6 million VND, accompanied by a 6-point deduction.
