Speaking at the ceremony, Pham Van Hieu, Editor-in-chief of VnExpress newspaper, recounted the journey that began 25 years ago with 20 young individuals led by former Editor-in-chief Thang Duc Thang.
On February 26, 2001, built on a publishing platform designed by Truong Dinh Anh, then Director of FPT's FOX company, VnExpress officially appeared on the Internet. At that time, the country had only about 700,000 Internet subscribers. After just six months, VnExpress's traffic reached 300,000 visits.
In November 2002, VnExpress was licensed to operate under the Ministry of Science and Technology, becoming Vietnam's first purely electronic newspaper. Since then, the newspaper has expanded its digital journalism space, attracting about 5 million comments annually along with tens of millions of reader opinions and perspectives.
Currently, VnExpress receives over 150 million monthly visits, ranking 32nd globally and is the only Vietnamese website in the global top 50 in the News and Media category, according to SimilarWeb. "VnExpress remains committed to the dream that began 25 years ago: to become a reliable, useful newspaper that contributes to a prosperous and bright future," he stated.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan shared memories from his years studying in Italy starting in 2001. When the Internet was not yet widespread, VnExpress served as a fast and reliable information channel, helping him stay updated on domestic economic, social, scientific, technological, and daily life developments, despite being tens of thousands of kilometers from home.
According to the Minister, from its early days to the present, VnExpress has been one of Vietnam's leading online newspapers and a symbol of innovation, technological adaptability, and a constant desire to improve to better serve its readers.
He praised VnExpress for consistently being among the press agencies at the forefront of applying new technologies, leveraging digital platforms, developing modern interactive models, and integrating scientific and technological achievements into journalistic activities.
In the context of strong artificial intelligence development, the Minister believes that the core values driving VnExpress's appeal are its reliability, analytical quality, and in-depth expertise. He expressed confidence that in the AI era, VnExpress's greatest value will not only be its traffic or the number of articles published, but its ability to convene quality communities, reliable voices, and ideas that can spread and contribute to the nation's development.
