Female student dies saving friend from drowning, awarded "brave youth" badge

Le Thi Quynh Chi, 17, who died after diving into Cua Lo beach to save a friend swept away by waves, was posthumously awarded the "brave youth" badge by the Central Youth Union.

On 15/4, Ho Phuc Hai, permanent deputy secretary of the Nghe An Provincial Youth Union, on behalf of the Central Youth Union, presented the badge to Le Anh Tuan, a resident of Nghi Loc commune, Quynh Chi's father.

"Quynh Chi's selfless act is a meaningful testament to the compassionate spirit, responsibility, and courage of youth," said Ho Phuc Hai.

Quynh Chi was a student in class 11A3 at Nguyen Thuc Tu High School. She was the eldest of five children in a farming family, and teachers and friends described her as gentle and diligent.

Earlier, on the evening of 10/4, Quynh Chi was walking with a group of friends at Cua Lo beach, in Cua Lo ward. At that time, a 14-year-old male student went swimming and was unfortunately swept out by waves, struggling in the water. Discovering the incident, Chi swam out to help, reaching the victim after several minutes of battling the waves and gradually pushing him closer to shore. However, the female student then became exhausted, was swept further out by the waves, and gradually sank. Rescue forces reached them and brought both to shore. The male student received first aid, was transferred to the hospital, and recovered from critical condition, but Quynh Chi did not survive.

On the same day, the Central Youth Union also awarded the "brave youth" badge to Vo Hoang Thanh, a student in class 10D4 at Nghi Loc High School. Around 4:20 p.m. on 10/4, Thanh noticed three people struggling in a whirlpool at Cua Lo beach. He borrowed a buoy, rushed out to rescue them, and brought two people to shore, but one victim did not survive.

The "brave youth" badge honors young people who perform courageous acts, willing to face danger to save lives, protect property, and serve community interests. This award is given to individuals whose spontaneous actions have clear social significance, with many cases being posthumously awarded to those who have died, aiming to spread a spirit of beautiful living and dedication among youth.
