On 21/4, Tran Van Hung, Deputy Director of the Southern Hydro-Meteorological Station, stated that the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces typically begins between May 10-20. This year, rains may arrive as early as the beginning of may, influenced by the southwest monsoon. Hung cautioned that these transitional rains often bring thunderstorms, lightning, whirlwinds, and even hail, advising residents to take proactive precautions.
In recent days, the southern region has experienced intense heat due to the expansion of a western hot low pressure system. Temperatures in areas such as Thoi An, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi, Go Vap, Thuan An, and Thu Dau Mot (formerly Binh Duong) have reached 37-38 degrees Celsius. Outdoor temperatures in inner-city areas felt even higher due to the urban heat island effect from concrete and high-rise buildings.
Looking ahead, on 29-30/4, central Ho Chi Minh City and suburban districts like Hoc Mon and Binh Chanh have a 50-70% chance of thunderstorms. These short bursts of rain, occurring amid high temperatures, could make the weather feel even more stifling and oppressive.

Last year, Ho Chi Minh City recorded its most significant early-season rainfall in eight years on 10/5. The downpour, lasting about 90 minutes and delivering nearly 230 mm of rain, caused severe flooding in several low-lying areas.
