Around 5:20 p.m., Nguyen Ngoc Yen Nhi, 11, and three 13-year-old friends from Song My hamlet, went swimming in the Ong river, located downstream near Cau Gay bridge in An Son hamlet, Ninh Son commune.
As the group prepared to return to the bank, the river water rose rapidly, and the current grew strong. With dusk approaching, the 11-year-old girl was unable to swim back to shore independently, becoming isolated on a rock in the middle of the river.
The Khanh Hoa Provincial Police's Fire Prevention, Fighting, and Rescue Department, Area 7 team, deployed one specialized vehicle and 7 officers to the scene. Rescue personnel used ropes and lifebuoys to reach the girl, who was trapped in water deeper than 2 meters and about 10 meters from the riverbank. After approximately 10 minutes, Yen Nhi was safely brought to shore.
According to the meteorological agency, Khanh Hoa experienced scattered showers and thunderstorms that day, with light to moderate southwest winds level 2-3.
Authorities advised that during the rainy season, water levels in rivers and streams can rise quickly with strong currents, posing a risk of drowning. Parents should supervise children during summer vacation and not allow them to swim unsupervised in rivers and streams, especially in deep, fast-flowing areas or those prone to flash floods.
