The project to renovate and upgrade National Highway 1, Van Dien - Ngoc Hoi section, was approved by the Hanoi People's Committee in 2010; however, construction only accelerated in 2024.
The upgraded road section spans 3,8 km, extending from Ngoc Hoi Martyrs' Cemetery to Yen Phu Pagoda. It traverses Tu Hiep, Ngu Hiep, Ngoc Hoi, and Lien Ninh communes of the former Thanh Tri district, with a total investment of nearly 890 billion VND.

The expanded route features dense residential areas and heavy traffic, serving as one of Hanoi's vital southern gateways.

The road has been expanded from 4 to 8 lanes, with a cross-section of over 40 m, facilitating smoother vehicle movement. To date, over 90% of the work on this section is complete, and several segments are already open to traffic.

Sidewalks have been widened to over 3 m. Some sections of the sidewalks are already paved, while others await drainage pipe installation.
Workers are currently focused on constructing the drainage system.

Telecommunication cables and power lines are awaiting undergrounding, while the old streetlights will be retained. The median strip is currently being completed. According to the plan, all remaining items will be completed and operational in Quarter I/2026.

During the construction of the drainage system, many households have had to use wooden planks as temporary access to their homes. Ms. Bui Thi Thuy stated that not only her family but most residents are eagerly awaiting the project's completion, as the prolonged construction has caused many inconveniences such as dust and traffic congestion.

The expansion of National Highway 1, Ngoc Hoi - Van Dien section, is expected to reduce traffic congestion on the city's southern gateway, especially during holidays and Tet; it will also share traffic volume with the parallel Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway.
