Ho Chi Minh City removes a vice chairman of the People's Committee

Bui Xuan Cuong, 51, has been removed from his position as vice chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, while Nguyen Van Hieu and Nguyen Van Dong have also ceased to be members of the city's People's Committee.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Council approved the removal of three members from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee at its third session on the afternoon of 19/6.

Bui Xuan Cuong, 51, a member of the City Party Committee, served as vice chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee since 2022. He continued in this role after the city's merger with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces.

Cuong holds a doctorate in civil engineering. His previous roles include Director of the Department of Transport and Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, where he helped resolve issues for the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro project.

As vice chairman, Cuong oversaw transport, public investment, ODA projects, urban railways, architecture, and urban development. In the first five months of the year, Ho Chi Minh City disbursed approximately 18% of its public investment capital plan, lower than the national average of 21,6% and ranking 23rd among 34 localities.

Following Cuong's departure, the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee now has seven members: Chairman Nguyen Van Duoc and six vice chairmen: Nguyen Loc Ha, Nguyen Manh Cuong, Bui Minh Thanh, Nguyen Cong Vinh, Hoang Nguyen Dinh, and Tran Van Bay.

The two department directors removed from their positions as members of the city's People's Committee are Nguyen Van Hieu, 60, Director of the Department of Education and Training, and Nguyen Van Dong, 50, Director of the Department of Ethnic and Religious Affairs.

Hieu holds a doctorate in education management and has worked in the education sector for many years, serving as Director of the Department of Education and Training since 2021.

Dong holds a bachelor's degree in economics and is a native of the former Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. Before becoming Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Ethnic and Religious Affairs after the merger, he previously headed the Departments of Industry and Trade, Foreign Affairs, and Ethnic and Religious Affairs for Ba Ria - Vung Tau province.

At the same session, the city's People's Council also elected Nguyen Tan Phat, 48, as an additional member of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee. Phat is an associate professor and doctor of economics. He previously served as Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Academy of Cadres and as Party Committee Secretary and Chairman of the People's Council for Saigon Ward.
