Man fined for dumping hundreds of beer bottles into Ke Van River

A 50-year-old man from Phu Xuan ward was fined 2 million dong and ordered to clean up hundreds of glass beer bottles he dumped into the Ke Van River.

Around 9h45 on 10/5, a shirtless man stood on the embankment of the Ke Van River, in the section passing through Kim Long and Phu Xuan wards, throwing glass beer bottles into the river. A woman assisted him, continuously bringing crates of empty beer bottles to the riverbank.

Witnessing this environmental damage, nearby residents warned him, but he ignored them and continued to discard the bottles. Within just 10 minutes, hundreds of glass beer bottles were thrown into the river, floating on the surface of the Ke Van River.

A representative from the Phu Xuan Ward People's Committee stated that after seeing a video recorded by residents, the ward identified the man who dumped the beer bottles into the Ke Van River as residing at 123 Le Duan street. During a meeting, he admitted to throwing the empty bottles into the river because the store would not collect them.

Phu Xuan ward authorities issued a fine of 2 million dong for violating environmental regulations. They also ordered the man to immediately use a boat to salvage all the discarded beer bottles.

According to the Phu Xuan Ward People's Committee, the man's actions are "unacceptable," especially as the ward and city have been implementing "green sundays" to foster a clean, green, and bright environment. His actions not only pollute the environment but also pose a danger to people traveling by boat or swimming in the river.

The Ke Van River, located between Kim Long and Phu Xuan wards, is a tributary of the Huong River. The Ke Van River also connects with the Bach Yen River and Ngu Ha River within the Imperial City of Hue via the Tay Thanh Thuy Quan (Western Citadel Water Gate). During the Nguyen dynasty, in addition to its defensive function, the Ke Van River served as a waterway for transportation and commerce around the Imperial City of Hue.
