Motorcycle athlete dies during competition in Can Tho

Motorcycle athlete Dinh Hoang Quoc Hieu suffered a fatal crash during the national motorcycle championship finals in Can Tho.

On the afternoon of 1/5, organizers announced that Dinh Hoang Quoc Hieu, 29, died early that morning from severe injuries sustained in a crash yesterday afternoon.

Hieu, representing the Bo Cau A Trang MFZ 262 Team, was competing in the 2026 national championship round-track motorcycle race at Can Tho Stadium. During the 10th heat (finals) yesterday afternoon, his Yamaha Exciter 150cc (number 12) skidded while entering turn 3.

The crash threw the racer, causing a severe impact with the track surface, leaving him motionless. He was rushed to Can Tho City General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with multiple severe injuries, including a broken cervical spine and traumatic brain injury.

The Can Tho City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in collaboration with the Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation and Minh Thi Trade - Service - Construction Co., Ltd., organized the race.

The event attracted 56 athletes from 28 clubs nationwide, competing in three categories: amateur (Suzuki Sport 120cc), professional 4-stroke (Exciter 150cc), and professional 2-stroke (YAZ 125cc), drawing a large audience.
