Ho Chi Minh City's People's Committee recently informed the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Construction that the proposed sea-crossing route from Can Gio to Vung Tau will align with the planned Sao Mai - Ben Dinh road. This route is set to conclude at the existing intersection with 30 Thang 4 road (national route 51A).

To enhance investment efficiency and alleviate traffic, studies propose extending the Sao Mai - Ben Dinh route from the 30 Thang 4 intersection to the planned coastal road. This extension would connect to 2 Thang 9 and 3 Thang 2 roads, significant arterial routes in former Vung Tau, thereby distributing traffic and easing congestion on 30 Thang 4 road. This proposed alignment necessitates the Sao Mai - Ben Dinh road passing through the current Vung Tau Airport.
Ho Chi Minh City deems the Sao Mai - Ben Dinh road's proposed path through Vung Tau Airport suitable, based on approved master plans. Consequently, the city has asked the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Construction to review and comment on the route's investment. They are also requested to provide future operational plans for Vung Tau Airport, which is crucial for integrated development planning.

Vung Tau Airport is situated on 30 Thang 4 road, in former Vung Tau City, now administratively part of Tam Thang ward, Ho Chi Minh City. This specialized airport is managed, operated, and exploited by Vietnam Helicopter Corporation. It features runways for small aircraft and helicopters, primarily supporting national defense training and personnel transport for the oil and gas sector.
Previously, Vung Tau Airport was slated for relocation to the Go Gang area, as part of the spatial development and urban reconstruction plans for former Ba Ria - Vung Tau. However, the Go Gang Airport project has since been removed from planning to facilitate urban development.

The Can Gio - Vung Tau sea-crossing road project, a key infrastructure initiative for Ho Chi Minh City, spans approximately 14,06 km with six lanes. Construction for component project 1, the access road on the Can Gio side, began in early July.
The route originates from Can Thanh - Long Hoa boulevard within the Vinhomes Green Paradise Urban Area in Can Gio, culminating at the 30 Thang 4 road intersection in Vung Tau. Designed for a speed of 80 km/h, the six-lane route has a total investment exceeding 93.000 billion VND. Its scope includes over 8 km of sea-crossing bridge, nearly 3,9 km of sea-crossing tunnel, and connecting approach roads.
