Rope descent and sea rescue drill in Son Tra

Forty elite officers from the Da Nang Police Department's fire prevention, fighting, and rescue police division conducted a drill on 20/5 to rescue tourists who fell into a deep ravine and were swept away by waves on the Son Tra peninsula.

On the morning of 20/5, 40 elite officers from the Da Nang Police Department's fire prevention, fighting, and rescue police division carried out a comprehensive drill on the Son Tra peninsula. The exercise simulated two critical situations: a tourist falling into a deep ravine and a group of people swept away by a rip current at sea.

The first scenario unfolded near Linh Ung Pagoda on the rocky beach area of Son Tra peninsula. A group of tourists was sightseeing and taking photos when a landslide occurred, causing one person to slip and fall down a cliff. The victim landed approximately 25 meters below the accessible point, sustaining multiple injuries and becoming unconscious. The slippery cliff face and strong waves prevented nearby relatives and other tourists from reaching them.

Upon receiving the report, rescue forces quickly traversed the forest, securing ropes on the steep cliffs to reach the scene.

To descend the cliff, rescuers used a UNI5 harness combined with Petzl braking devices or a figure-8 descender, allowing them to safely control their speed in the challenging terrain."]}"}

Major Nguyen Huy Linh, head of the fire prevention, fighting, and rescue team and leader of the elite special fire prevention, fighting, and rescue police unit, directed operations via radio to ensure flawless coordination.

Reaching the injured victim 7 meters up the cliff, officers assessed their condition, applied splints, and provided initial first aid in preparation for evacuation. The rescue team then placed the victim on a stretcher, coordinating smoothly between the team pulling the three-legged pulley system ropes above and the accompanying officer who simultaneously lowered the ropes and pushed the stretcher.

The rescue took about 15 minutes, with most of the time spent pulling the victim over the 40-degree inclined cliff face.

Immediately after rescuing the person from the ravine, Major Linh and his team rappelled down the cliff, racing against time to reach the beach.

The scenario then escalated when a group of 8 tourists on a nearby team-building exercise was swept away by a rip current, pushing them more than 40 meters from shore. The commander immediately issued orders to switch to the second rescue phase. Facing large waves, the optimal plan was implemented: officers donned life jackets, securely fastened double O-lock safety ropes to themselves, and plunged into the rough sea to reach the struggling victims.

{"caption_all":null,"caption_items":["Victims were given emergency life jackets, and rescuers used a backstroke towing technique to bring them to shore. At the water's edge, teammates provided cardiopulmonary resuscitation and rescue breaths.","A team of divers from the river fire prevention, fighting, and rescue police unit was mobilized, equipped with specialized diving gear to brave the waves and search for missing victims offshore."]}"}

Four divers brought the 50 kg simulated mannequins safely ashore. This drill enhanced coordination capabilities and honed tactical skills for handling specific accident scenarios in Son Tra's challenging terrain.

Prior to this practical drill in Son Tra, the Da Nang Police Department's fire prevention, fighting, and rescue police division had conducted numerous large-scale drills at urban complexes and commercial centers. These included fire fighting and rescue drills involving hundreds of participants at large commercial centers or coastal high-rise buildings, utilizing modern ladder trucks, cranes, and autonomous fire fighting robots.
