On 5/1, at the ceremony commemorating the 40th anniversary of its first issue, journalist Nguyen Ngoc Toan, editor-in-chief of Thanh Nien Newspaper, recalled the context of 1985. Vietnamese revolutionary journalism faced a pivotal moment as the country prepared for the "Doi Moi" (Renovation) process. At that time, the idea for a newspaper dedicated to young people also emerged, leading to the newspaper's launch on 3/1/1986.

Starting as a weekly newsletter called "Tuan tin Thanh Nien" (Thanh Nien Weekly News), published once a week, the newspaper gradually developed into a daily publication. After four decades, Thanh Nien is now not only a media outlet for young people but also a widely circulated socio-political newspaper both domestically and internationally. The newspaper boasts a diverse ecosystem, including a daily print edition, an online platform, and a presence on social media.
Nguyen Ngoc Toan stated that the newspaper currently has extensive reach, serving as a crucial platform to effectively fulfill its functions of disseminating information, educating, and guiding positive ideals and lifestyles for young people in particular and the community in general. The newspaper also actively combats negativity, corruption, and waste.
On this occasion, Thanh Nien Newspaper received commendations from numerous ministries, committees, and agencies, including: the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, along with the Ministries of Culture, Sports and Tourism; National Defense; Education and Training; Construction; and the National Assembly Office. Additionally, the newspaper received commendations from many localities for its contributions to promoting socio-economic development oriented towards the community.
