The 14th Party Congress is currently underway, with the significant task of electing the new Central Committee. As this crucial process begins today, the outgoing 13th Central Committee consists of 163 members. Of these, 61 members are over 60 years old, 75 are between 51 and 60, and 27 are 50 or younger. All 18 alternate members of the 13th Central Committee are under 50.
Nguyen Anh Tuan, Deputy Head of the Central Policy and Strategy Board, is the youngest official member of the 13th Central Committee at 47 years old. Mua A Vang, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Dien Bien Provincial Fatherland Front Committee, is the youngest alternate member, aged 43.
Currently, the Politburo comprises 16 members, while the Secretariat has 10. Within the Politburo, 7 members are over 66, 8 are between 60 and under 66, and the only member under 60 is Le Minh Hung, Head of the Central Organization Commission. The Secretariat includes 3 members under 60, 5 members between 60 and under 66, and 2 members over 66.
New central committee expected to have 200 members, politburo 17-19 members
General Secretary To Lam previously emphasized the importance of quality, appropriate numbers, and suitable structure for the 14th Central Committee, Politburo, and Secretariat. Speaking in Hanoi in 7/2025 at a gathering of veteran revolutionaries, pre-insurrection cadres, heroic Vietnamese mothers, generals, and armed forces heroes, he stressed that these bodies must meet the demands of comprehensive leadership.
The 14th Central Committee is projected to have 200 members, consisting of 180 official members and 20 alternate members. The 14th Politburo is expected to have 17-19 members, and the Secretariat will maintain 11-13 members. These figures largely align with recent terms. Projections indicate that young cadres under 47 will make up over 10% of the Central Committee, while female and ethnic minority cadres will account for 10-12%.
The preparation of personnel for the 14th Central Committee has been a meticulous process. Permanent Member of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu noted at an international press conference on 14/1 that the 13th Central Committee and the 14th Congress Personnel Subcommittee conducted this work in strict adherence to Party regulations, the principle of democratic centralism, and legal provisions. The process ensured "scientific rigor, strictness, democracy, objectivity, transparency, promoting democracy, and wisdom."
Furthermore, the selection for the 14th term prioritizes a balanced approach between standards and structure, continuity and stability, innovation and development, expertise and creativity, and practical capabilities. A key focus of the 14th personnel work is emphasizing quality, the effectiveness of work output, and dedication as primary metrics for evaluating, appointing, and utilizing cadres.
