Truck ban eases traffic in Hanoi's inner city

Many previously congested streets in Hanoi's inner city have become noticeably clearer after the city implemented a daytime ban on trucks weighing 2 tons or more.

Effective 15/1, Hanoi has prohibited trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 2 tons or more from operating in the inner city during the day. These vehicles are only permitted to circulate from 9 PM to 6 AM the following morning. Trucks weighing less than 2 tons are allowed to operate outside of peak hours.

Following the ban, traffic conditions on many roads have changed significantly. For instance, at 8 AM in January 2025, before the ban on trucks over 2 tons, Nguyen Trai street heading towards Nga Tu So was severely congested. By April 2026, vehicle density had decreased considerably, resulting in much clearer roads.

Nguyen Trai street heading towards Ha Dong at 5:30 PM, where traffic congestion has also decreased compared to the same period in 2025.

Truck ban signs are placed at the intersection on Giai Phong street.

Tay Son street (Dong Da ward), particularly the section over Thai Ha bridge, which was frequently congested during peak hours in both directions, is now clearer.

Nga Tu So at 8 AM shows clear roads. Congestion primarily occurs around 7 AM but dissipates quickly.

On Do Muoi street, heading towards Giai Phong, despite it being 7:30 AM during the peak commute for workers and students, there is no traffic jam.

Truong Chinh street at its intersection with Nga Tu Vong (ring road 2) at 3:20 PM, congestion is only observed at traffic light waiting areas.

Lang street at 8:10 AM sees a high concentration of vehicles at intersections.

On Nguyen Xien street, Thanh Xuan ward, congestion still occurs during peak hours. However, according to Bui Minh Hai, a frequent commuter on this route, travel has become more comfortable. Previously, morning congestion often lasted over one hour. The reduced traffic has also significantly curbed vehicles driving onto sidewalks.

Hanoi currently still permits vehicles serving public postal services and transporting price-stabilized goods to operate during peak hours. Individuals and businesses whose vehicles need to operate within restricted areas must submit applications to the Traffic Police Department, City Police for approval.

At 8 PM, many large trucks are parked on the elevated ring road 3 near Linh Dam lake, waiting to enter the inner city. Not far away, on Do Muoi street, a parking lot is filled with large trucks. These vehicles stop to transfer goods to smaller trucks for transport deeper into the city. *Viet An*
