The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (VMRCC) reported on 9/3 that fishing vessel QNg-95157 TS, owned by Bui Hau and captained by Bui Minh Long, 36, was carrying 34 fishermen. The vessel had departed early in March to fish for squid.
While operating offshore, the vessel's engine failed and could not be repaired, leaving it to drift at sea. The incident occurred approximately 100 nautical miles (over 180 km) from Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa, where winds were force 4 with rough seas.
Another vessel, QNg-90459 TS, owned and captained by Ngo Van Can, 54, was carrying 36 fishermen. During its fishing trip, this vessel also experienced engine trouble. After a temporary repair to head towards shore, the engine failed again on the morning of 9/3, leaving the vessel drifting at sea approximately 40 nautical miles (over 70 km) from the Vung Ro area, formerly Phu Yen.
Upon receiving distress calls from both vessels, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center issued a maritime alert, requesting assistance from nearby operating vessels. The center also coordinated with the Quang Ngai Provincial Border Guard to monitor the vessels' positions and prepare rescue plans to bring both vessels and their fishermen ashore.
