Cold air brings thunderstorms to many areas

A cold air spell is forecast to bring thunderstorms to northern Vietnam, from Ha Tinh to eastern Gia Lai today and tomorrow, with nighttime temperatures dropping by 3-4 degrees Celsius.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) announced that a cold air mass is moving south. This morning, it will have a slight impact on the northern mountainous regions, intensifying in the afternoon and evening across the Northeast, followed by the lowlands and most of the Northwest.

During this cold spell, the lowest temperatures in northern Vietnam will generally range from 15-18 degrees Celsius, with some mountainous areas experiencing temperatures below 14 degrees Celsius, a drop of 3-4 degrees Celsius compared to yesterday. US-based Accuweather forecasts Hanoi to be 17-26 degrees Celsius today, falling to 16-24 degrees Celsius tomorrow. High-altitude locations above 1,500 meters, such as Sa Pa (Lao Cai), will see lows of 9-15 degrees Celsius.

Central Vietnam, specifically the northern and central provinces, will also be affected by the cold air starting today. Thanh Hoa is expected to see lowest temperatures of 15-18 degrees Celsius.

Inland areas will experience winds of level 2-3, while coastal regions will see winds of level 3-4. From noon and this afternoon, the Gulf of Tonkin will have winds of level 6, with gusts reaching level 7-8, and sea waves 2-3 meters high. The northern East Sea (including Hoang Sa special zone) will experience winds of level 6; however, the northeastern sea area will see stronger winds of level 7, with gusts up to level 8-9, and sea waves 3-5 meters high.

From the night of 9/3, the sea area stretching from southern Quang Tri to Dong Thap will experience winds of level 6, gusting to level 7-8, leading to rough seas and waves 2-3 meters high.

Today and tonight, northern Vietnam, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An will experience showers and thunderstorms. Over the next two days, areas from Ha Tinh to eastern Gia Lai will have rain, with some localized heavy rainfall. The meteorological agency warns that thunderstorms, accompanied by whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong gusts, could impact agricultural production, fell trees, and cause damage to homes, transportation infrastructure, and other facilities.
